VHS Tennis Team
Friday, 22 February 2013

February 22--The VHS tennis teams played the first match of the season against Jeff Davis at Jeff Davis.  Two non-region matches scheduled previously had been rained out so the teams had no chance to work out the beginning-season jitters before playing an important region match.  The VHS girls' team won 3-2 with wins coming at #2 singles, #3 singles, and #1 doubles.  The VHS boys' team lost 0-5.

The girls' team had to make last minute position changes due to an injury.  Kalyn Merritt usually plays # singles and will be out for a couple of weeks.  Abigail Dixon, normally part of the #1 doubles team, was already having to make a move to singles after her doubles partner graduated last year.  The injury to Merritt forced her into the #1 singles position.  Dixon was defeated at this position, 2-6, 0-6.  Brennan Merritt, new to the team this year, had to play #2 singles and pulled out a win-7-6, 6-2.  Elizabeth Holman has worked hard during the off-season and has earned the #3 singles position.  Holman won 6-3, 6-4.  Breanna Spence, a returning player, and Kennedy Wright, new to the team, formed the #1 doubles pair and won 6-2, 6-3.  Tanisha Bowles, a returning player, and Destany Gilchriest, new to the team, played #2 doubles.  They split sets and played a tiebreak set in lieu of the third set since the team had already won the match. They won 7-5, lost 2-6, then lost the tie-break 7-10.  Summer Adams played an extra singles set and won 8-1.  Emily Combs and Taylor Fabacher, both beginning players, played an extra doubles set and lost 2-8.

The boys' team was defeated 0-5.  Julian McCaig, playing #1 singles as he did last year, lost 0-6, 1-6.  William Collins, who played mostly doubles last year, played #2 singles and lost 1-6, 3-6.  Trace Calloway, playing #3 singles again, lost 0-6, 0-6.  This year, Austin Davis and Travis McCaig are paired at #1 doubles.  They lost 3-6, 1-6.  Daniel Morrison and David Roberts worked together at #2 doubles for this match and were defeated 5-7, 2-6.  Carson Cato and Sterling James played an extra doubles set and lost 0-8.

The next match is scheduled for Monday, 2/25, at home against Appling County.
