February 12--Baseball Edges Mid-Continent University
2012 BB

The Brewton-Parker College baseball team returned to action on Friday in Mount Vernon, (2/8), to take on the Cougars of Mid-Continent University (Ky) in a non-conference matchup.  After an indifferent start to the season, which saw the Barons drop their opening game, the boys were looking to come out firing on all cylinders and get as many wins as possible from the three-game series against the Cougars.

That is exactly what the Barons did, recording an astounding 10-0 victory in the first game, out-hitting their opponents 13-2, and recording no errors.  Pitcher Joel McLaughlin pitched all eight innings for the Barons, allowing only two hits and striking out 10 batters.  Edgar Delgado, Jon Kemmer, Keaton Stroud, and Billy Mullins all had two RBI’s, and John Hammock added a single RBI and three hits.  Eddie Peyton led the Barons with four RBI‘s.

After this convincing victory, the Barons returned to their home field on Saturday, (2/9), for the remainder of the series.  In a more closely fought second game, the Barons edged out their opponents 3-2.  Jeremy Coram pitched the duration of the game, giving up six hits while stirking out seven.  The Barons scored their runs in the first and second innings, stunning the Cougars, who found themselves down 0-3 entering the third.  No runs were scored until the sixth inning when the Cougars stepped up their offense and added one run and then added another in the seventh inning.  The Cougars edged the Barons 6-5 in hits, but the Barons held on and won the game 3-2.

In the final game of the series the Barons fell 1-2 to the Cougars, with the winning run scored in the 9th inning.  Billy Mullins went 2-4 at bat and scored the Baron‘s only run.  The Barons were out-hit 3-11, and despite the Cougars recording 4 errors to the Barons single error, their persistence prevailed and they managed to snatch an unlikely victory from the Barons.

The Barons are now 4-2 and will play again on home soil this Saturday (2/16) against Edward Waters College.  The first pitch is scheduled for 1pm.
