Indian Wrestlers Qualify for State
Monday, 11 February 2013
February 11--Two Vidalia Wrestlers qualified for the GHSA State Tournament this past weekend.  At 285 pounds, Shakeem Lassiter placed fourth.  He opened the tournament with an exhilarating match with Meyers from Washington Wilkes, the Area 4 Champion.  Lassiter was leading the match when Meyers turned the match around to win and eventually win the tournament.  Lassiter then defeated Long of Greater Atlanta Christian School by pin and Smith of East Laurens, Area 2 Champion, by 13 – 8 final.  Lassiter lost to Hester of Toombs County in the consolation finals.  He will face Bexley of Bremen in the first round of the state tournament.

Daniel Copeland, 220 pounds, opened the tournament with a 6 – 1 win over Crumrine of Greater Atlanta Christian School before falling to 2012 State Runner Up Anderson from Jefferson.  Copeland bounced back with a masterful match against Hackney of Washington Wilkes in the consolation semi-finals.  At the end of the first period, Copeland hit a standing switch to take a 2 – 0 lead.  He expanded the lead in the second and third periods to earn his place in the state tournament.  Copeland, leading at the time, lost by pin to Harper of Jeff Davis.  Coach Ferry, “It was great getting Daniel and Shakeem through to the state tournament.  The sectional is just a qualifying tournament; we don’t get too caught in placing here because you don’t really know who is on the other side.”  Tyler Campbell at 132 pounds and Devin Johnson at 170 pounds both finished sixth.  Campbell defeated Nava of Cook County by pin.  Johnson defeated Payne of Berrien County by a major decision.  Chance Butler also competed at 106 pounds.
