Senator Williams "No Easy Answers"
Saturday, 17 January 2009

January 17--  When the Georgia legislature reconvened last week in Atlanta, members of the Senate elected Senator Tommie Williams of Lyons as the President Pro Tem of the Senate.

"My role is just trying to keep piece in the Senate which is not hard to do except in a year like this when we have a terrible budget crisis.  My constituency goes from about 180,000 to something like nine million, so it's a lot more work to do in responding to people across the state," he says.

Governor Sonny Perdue gave the legislature his proposed budget last week.  And according to Senator Williams, "There's no way to say a budget with $2.2 billion worth of cuts in it is something I'm happy about, but we have a constitutional obligation to balance the budget.  The Governor made about the best stab at it that he could.  The one thing he didn't fund is the Homeowners Tax Relief Grant which is a grant to the counties which we are trying to find some of it if not all of it to avoid more taxes on property owners," the Senator reports.

"We'got a tough job, and it's the same kind of job every business owner and homeowner in this state are trying to do and that's to balance a budget in tough times," he notes.
