Monday, 04 February 2013
February 4--The Vidalia Wrestling team competed in the Area 2AA Tournament and qualified five wrestlers.  Chance Butler (106) qualified in fourth place.  Devin Johnson (170) won three matches in his first area tournament and only his second tournament overall to place fourth.  He defeated Hill of Bacon County, Tyson of East Laurens, and Lundy of Fitzgerald.  Shakeem Lassiter (285) finished fourth, but had to win four matchers to reach that accomplishment.  Lassiter defeated Vargas of Brooks County, West of Benedictine, Kimsey of Metter, and Bedford of MCA.  Tyler Campbell (132) reached his third finals match of the season.  He defeated Dang of Benedictine and Brown of Toombs County.  In his second double overtime match in as many weeks, Tyler defeated Reed of Fitzgerald.  O’Neal of East Laurens, a two time state qualifier and senior captain, defeated Campbell in the championship match.  Daniel Copeland (220) returned to the Area Finals for a second year in a row.  He defeated Boone of Berrien County and Austin of Screven County in route to the finals match.  Trailing 8 to 11 with time running out, Copeland went for broke trying to put his opponent, George of East Laurens, on his back but was defeated.  Others contributing to the ninth place finish of the team was Connor McCoy (113), Michael Joiner (126), Reggie Lamb (138), Darnell Hendley (145), Anitquell Barras (182), and in his last match of high school Daniel Wright (195).  On completing his wrestling career at Vidalia, Wright said, “It has been fun.  I really enjoy spending time with my friends and teammates at all the tournaments.”  Coach Ferry commented, “It has been a joy coaching Daniel in wrestling and football (as his position coach).  Jaws is a great young man.  I cannot wait to see Daniel mature into the great member of our society.  He is what it means to be an Indian.”
