(L-R) STC Provost Larry Calhoun, Faculty Member of the Year Jennifer Corner, Non-Supervisory Staff Member of the Year Lula Patrick, Student of the Year Sharon Wyche, Supervisory Staff Member of the Year Susan Cross and STC President Dr. Cathy Mitchell.

January 24--  One of the Darby Bank employees who lost her job when the bank was sold is making lemonade out of lemons.

Sharon Wyche of Lyons is the student of the year at Southeastern Technical College and will represent the college in the Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) program.

"Wow!  I'm just so honored and pleased.  Your hard work pays off.  I mean, I'm in the middle of redefining myself," she said in accepting the award.

Wyche already has an associate's degree in business but made a decision to go into radiology when her banking career was cut short.

"We kind of saw it coming.  I wanted to prepare for when it did come and thank God for STC because it really helped me make that transition.  It's been really good to me and the good people at STC will really help you be everything that you want to be," she said.

The proudest member of the awards ceremony audience was Sharon's mother, Betty Gillis who said, "I'm so happy for her and very proud of her."

During the coming year, the student of the year serves as a goodwill ambassador for technical education.

"I look forward to doing that to encourage everyone to take advantage of education and especially technical education throughout Georgia," Wyche promised.

The college also named the nead of its practical nursing program, Jennifer Corner, as its faculty member of the year.  Staff members of the year are Susan Cross among supervisors and Lula Patrick among non-supervisory employees.

College President Dr. Cathy Mitchell said, "Tonight is kind of the culmination of the year for us.  It's the time when we celebrate everything at Southeastern Tech.  The students, the faculty and the staff, it's just the best of the best."
